While its overall design remains consistent with the original, the Apex Edition will debut in a striking Crimson Shadow red, inspired by the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor. This new variant features a silver frame and an orange Alert Slider, alongside a vegan leather back cover similar to the Voyager Black model.

Although specific details on the hardware upgrades are limited, we do know that the Apex Edition will include enhanced storage, advanced AI image editing tools, and innovative security features. The product listing also hints at increased memory capacity. The OnePlus Open Apex Edition, with its stunning Crimson Shadow color, is scheduled for release on August 7.

Possible upgrades

The exact details of what will be added to the OnePlus Open Apex Edition remain under wraps, as OnePlus has kept the specifics close to its chest. On the official website, the RAM and storage options are marked with an “X,” indicating that the numbers are yet to be disclosed.

However, we can make some educated guesses about the potential upgrades. The introduction of AI image editing tools suggests features similar to the Pixel 8’s Magic Editor, which allows users to reposition objects within photos. Given that the OnePlus Open already includes an AI Eraser for removing unwanted elements, it’s plausible that the Apex Edition will enhance these capabilities further.

In terms of storage, the Apex Edition might see an increase from the current 512GB to a full terabyte. Regarding RAM, while 32GB seems improbable, the device might feature 24GB of RAM, aligning with the specifications of the China-only OnePlus Ace 3 Pro. If this is the case, the Apex Edition would become one of the first non-Chinese OnePlus phones to offer more than 16GB of memory.

Solid user experience

Aside from a few updates, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will closely resemble the current model. It will continue to feature the dual AMOLED displays, and there will be no changes to the chipset or the rear camera array.

However, the user experience is expected to improve, especially with the anticipated enhancements to the editing tools. While the Apex Edition promises to offer significant upgrades, it does come with a small drawback: it is only guaranteed “three major Android updates and four years of security updates from launch,” compared to the standard model’s four years for both.

The pricing details for the OnePlus Open Apex Edition have yet to be announced, but they will be revealed on August 7. In the meantime, you can explore TechRadar’s list of the best OnePlus phones for 2024.
