Now eyeing a record fourth European title at the Olympiastadion on Sunday, Spain’s hard-fought path instills confidence in their ability to triumph, whether facing England or the Netherlands.
“I am proud of these players and the journey we have taken to reach the final,” expressed De la Fuente following their thrilling 2-1 victory over France in the semi-finals. “Success requires effort and resilience in life; challenges are inevitable. These young players have shown dedication to improve daily, and it is a privilege to coach them.”
Spain advanced from their group without conceding a goal, defeating Croatia 3-0, defending champions Italy 1-0, and concluding with a 1-0 victory over Albania with a largely reserve team.
In the knockout stages, De la Fuente’s squad exhibited unwavering determination, overcoming every obstacle.
Debutants Georgia, backed by fervent support, initially took the lead, only for Spain to retaliate and secure a resounding 4-1 victory, which De la Fuente believed could have been even more decisive.
Their resilience was further demonstrated in extra time against hosts Germany, rebounding after conceding a late equalizer in the 89th minute.
Against France, trailing early after Randal Kolo Muani’s opener, Spain staged a swift comeback with goals from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo within five minutes, leaving their coach deeply impressed.
“We demonstrated excellent football throughout the tournament,” remarked De la Fuente. “Our team is versatile, allowing us to adapt to different challenges.”
Exciting talents like Yamal and Nico Williams dazzled on the wings, contributing to Spain’s dynamic playstyle, while players such as Fabian Ruiz and Marc Cucurella showcased their prowess despite club-level challenges.

For France, however, Euro 2024 ended on a disappointing note. Despite reaching the semi-finals under Didier Deschamps’ leadership, their lackluster performance throughout the tournament left much to be desired.
The French forward line, once formidable, struggled, with Antoine Griezmann facing scrutiny over his international future.
Kylian Mbappe, hampered by a broken nose early in the tournament, failed to live up to expectations, managing only a penalty and an assist.
“We are disappointed; we wanted to win the European Championship,” lamented Mbappe. “But that’s football; we must move forward.”
While France’s journey in Germany was underwhelming, their pedigree suggests they will bounce back strongly for future competitions, including the World Cup in two years’ time.
