Samsung Galaxy S23 and S24 to Introduce New Camera Mode for Stunning Celestial Portraits Astro Portrait Mode from Galaxy Z Flip 6 Coming to Galaxy S23 and S24

During its recent Unpacked 2024 event, Samsung unveiled not only the latest Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 foldable devices but also highlighted several exciting updates coming to these new gadgets. Among these updates are enhanced astrophotography tools, which will also be extended to older Samsung models like the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24.

When utilizing the phone’s Astrophoto mode to capture stunning images of the night sky, such as during this year’s solar eclipse, the camera employs a long exposure to capture the twinkling of distant stars and galaxies. However, this prolonged exposure time presents challenges when including a person in the shot, as any movement can result in blurry images.

To address this issue, the new Astro Portrait mode introduced with the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 takes two separate shots: one with the subject in focus and another of the backdrop featuring the night sky. The camera software then merges these images to deliver optimal results, combining the best of portrait photography with astrophotography capabilities.

It appears that users of older Samsung phones won’t miss out, as a Community post (translated from Korean) has confirmed that this feature will also be available on the Galaxy S23 and S24 series phones, encompassing the base, Plus, and Ultra models.

Here’s how to use Astro Portrait Mode:

The upcoming Astro Portrait feature will be included in an update to the Expert RAW camera mode, although Samsung has not specified the release date yet.

Once the update becomes available, to use Astro Portrait, ensure that you have Expert RAW installed. Open the camera app on your Samsung Galaxy phone and swipe through the options at the bottom (such as Photo, Video, etc.) until you reach More. Here, you’ll find various camera modes, including Expert RAW located in the top-left corner.

Tap on the icon to install Expert RAW if it’s not already installed. In the future, you can access it either from this menu or its dedicated app, which will now be in your library for easy access from your home screen if desired.

In Expert RAW, locate Astrophoto settings by tapping on the icon resembling a constellation in the menu at the top of the screen. Once the update is released, the new Astro Portrait mode is expected to appear in this section.
